Like many of my landscapes, these four bird paintings are memory works - painted from the images retained in memory from time spent observing birds. Initially these works were to be studies for larger paintings. Emphasis was on design and patterning of the plant material surrounding the birds. Each bird more than fills the picture area as the purpose was to try to get into the bird's view rather than the human view (which is "small bird in large landscape"). Also, "Killdeer - #1" was painted as a response to a poem for a Verbal-Visual Exchange (an annual event in Lewistown, MT in which writers and visual artists to share their creative production.)

This work was created just outside my studio door where I have an unobstructed view of the Judith Mountains northeast of Lewistown.
I worked rapidly, using a combination of linear marks and washes of color.
This work was juried into (and sold at) the 13th Annual Paris Gibson Square Museum Benefit Live Auction.
